An Act concerning certain public contracts and supplementing Chapter 34 of Title 52 of the Revised Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. Notwithstanding the provisions of any other law to the contrary, and unless the head of the department, or other public officer charged with the duty by law, shall determine it to be inconsistent with the public interest, or the cost to be unreasonable, only products bearing the federal Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star label shall be acquired under any contract paid with or out of State funds.
2. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill requires the State to purchase products bearing the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star label. Energy Star is a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Energy Star label can be found on major appliances, office equipment, lighting and consumer electronics.
Energy Star products deliver the same or better performance as comparable models while using less energy and saving money. The use of Energy Star products currently saves businesses, organizations, and consumers more than $5 billion each year.
