A Joint Resolution designating the week of February 26 through March 3 of 2007 as “Technology Innovation Week” in New Jersey.
Whereas, Technological innovation is a powerful engine of economic growth in the global economy; and
Whereas, In New Jersey the technology sector is a major contributor to the overall health of the State’s economy and its continued success is dependent upon the State’s ability to supply employers in this sector with a technologically-literate workforce; and
Whereas, Supporting programs that encourage the State’s young citizens to pursue education and careers in science and technology is a proactive way to meet the future workforce needs of the State’s technology sector; and
Whereas, The FIRST (For Recognition and Inspiration in Science and Technology) Program is dedicated to inspiring young people’s interest in science and technology through innovative student robotics programs that match students with local engineers, engineering professors and students, and business people to solve real-world engineering challenges; and
Whereas, By engaging students in the creative “hands-on, minds-on” process of technological innovation, FIRST’s programs help young people develop technical expertise while gaining the self-confidence, knowledge, and skills they need to meet life’s challenges; and
Whereas, With the financial and technical support of leading technology-based companies, business organizations, colleges, and universities, the New Jersey FIRST Program based at the New Jersey Institute of Technology includes 93 FIRST Robotics teams and FIRST VEX Challenge high school teams, 240 FIRST LEGO League middle school teams, and other technology teams that participate in competitions, tournaments, and programs throughout the region; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The Legislature applauds and commends the FIRST Foundation, its sponsors, partners, educators, and volunteers in the State for their efforts to engage students in the creative process of technological innovation and to create community-wide celebrations of young people’s achievements as they explore the fields of science and technology.
2. The Legislature hereby designates February 26 through March 3, 2007 as “Technology Innovation Week” in New Jersey to celebrate the efforts of young people building the knowledge and skills needed in the technologically-driven global economy and, in particular, to celebrate the efforts of the young participants of the 2007 New Jersey FIRST Competition that will take place in the State’s capital during this week.
3. The Governor is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and the citizens of this State to observe the week with appropriate activities and programs.
STATEMENT
This resolution designates February 26 through March 3, 2007 as “Technology Innovation Week” in New Jersey to celebrate the efforts of young people who are building the knowledge and skills they will need in the technologically-driven global economy and, in particular, to celebrate the efforts of the young participants of the 2007 New Jersey FIRST Competition that will take place in the State’s capital during this week.
