STATEMENT

†††† This resolution restores the amount of an item of appropriation in the annual appropriations act for fiscal year 2012 that was reduced by the Governor's line-item veto.††

†††† The Grants-In-Aid line-item appropriation to the New Jersey Higher Education Commission, in but not of the Department of State, for Opportunity Program Grants was reduced by the Governor by $5,500,000 to $25,519,000 in accordance with the Governorís veto statement of June 30, 2011.†

†††† The Legislature seeks through this concurrent resolution to restore the total amount of State funding that was provided for appropriation ($31,019,000) to the New Jersey Higher Education Commission for Opportunity Program Grants under the annual appropriations bill for fiscal year 2012 (Senate Bill No. 4000 of 2011) as transmitted to the Governor on June 29, 2011.

†††† The Opportunity Program Grants are administered by the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education in conjunction with the Educational Opportunity Fund, and are awarded to students during the academic year to assist qualified students in meeting certain college expenses, such as fees, books, room, and transportation, not covered by other State tuition and grant program.†

†††† The restoration of State funding as provided for by this resolution will enable the commission to assist a greater number of low-income New Jersey residents in their pursuit of higher education.
