The Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee reports favorably and with committee amendments Assembly Bill No. 2933.
As amended and reported by the committee, Assembly Bill No. 2933 directs the Department of Law and Public Safety to undertake an Internet privacy and social media responsibility public education campaign.
Under the bill, the Department of Law and Public Safety is directed to undertake an online educational campaign to inform young people about the importance of maintaining one’s privacy while using the Internet, how to use social media platforms responsibly, and how to utilize the privacy settings on websites and social media platforms.
To accomplish these objectives, the department is directed to maintain and operate a website to provide information concerning how to protect one’s privacy on the Internet, how to use social media responsibly and protect one’s privacy while using social media, and the potential negative consequences of failing to protect one’s privacy on the Internet or to use social media responsibly.
In addition, the department is directed to also produce or cause to be produced instructional videos on how to use the privacy settings on popular websites and social media platforms and to post those videos on the website.
Further, the department is directed to maintain an active presence on popular social media platforms and to utilize those platforms to disseminate information relating to the Internet privacy and social media responsibility public education campaign authorized under this bill and to encourage young people to access the information.
Finally, the bill authorizes the department to develop an internship program and to partner with student organizations, State academic institutions, and State and local agencies in furthering this public educational campaign.
