STATEMENT

†††† This bill clarifies that credit card account numbers must be truncated on merchantsí copies of sales receipts.

†††† Under current law, a retail sales establishment may not electronically print more than the last five digits of a customer's credit card account number or the expiration date of that credit card upon any sales receipt provided at the point of sale to the customer.† An exception is made for sales receipts in which the sole means of recording the customer's credit card number is by handwriting or by an imprint or copy of the credit card.

†††† This bill would specify that the prohibition against printing more than the last five digits of a credit card account number applies to copies of sales receipts retained by the retail sales establishment, in addition to those physically provided to the customer.
