      The Senate Education Committee reports favorably Assembly Bill No. 880 with committee amendments.

      As amended, this bill establishes the New Jersey Reading Disabilities Task Force to study practices for diagnosing, treating, and educating students with reading disabilities and how the State’s current statutes and regulations impact these students.  The 13-member task force will include the Commissioners of Education and Human Services, four legislative members, and seven public members.  The task force will issue a final report to the Governor and Legislature that includes its findings, recommendations, and any proposed legislation that the task force would like the Legislature to consider for adoption.

      The committee amended the bill to provide that the task force would include a person recommended by the New Jersey Speech-Language-Hearing Association and a person recommended by the New Jersey Education Association.

      As reported by the committee, this bill is identical to Senate Bill No. 2400 with committee amendments, which also was reported by the committee on this same date.
