An Act concerning bicycle safety and supplementing Title 39 of the Revised Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. An operator of a motor vehicle who commits a motor vehicle violation under Title 39 of the Revised Statutes shall be subject to a fine of up to $500 when that violation is the proximate cause of a collision or accident with a bicyclist. The operator of the motor vehicle shall be subject to a penalty under this section regardless of the level of injury to the bicyclist or damage to the bicycle. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, a conviction under this section shall not merge with any conviction for a violation of Title 39 of the Revised Statues or Title 2C of the New Jersey Statutes.
2. This act shall take effect immediately.
This bill establishes a fine of up to $500 for any operator of a motor vehicle who commits a motor vehicle offense that is the proximate cause of a collision with a bicyclist. Under the provisions of this bill, the fine applies regardless of whether the bicyclist is injured or the bicycle is damaged.
