ASSEMBLY LABOR COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

ASSEMBLY, No. 2294

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED:  OCTOBER 13, 2016

The Assembly Labor Committee reports favorably Assembly Bill No. 2294.

This bill expands certain civil rights protections under the "Law Against Discrimination" P.L.1945, c.169 (C.10:5-1 et seq.) to include breastfeeding and expressing milk or related medical conditions.  Under this bill, it would be a civil rights violation for a working woman to be fired or otherwise discriminated against because of breastfeeding or expressing her milk during breaks.

The bill also requires an employer to provide reasonable break time each day and a suitable location for an employee who is breastfeeding to express her milk in private.
