An Assembly Resolution supporting the New Jersey Naval Militia Joint Command.

Whereas, The New Jersey Naval Militia was founded in 1894 as a military unit of the State, decommissioned in 1963, and reactivated from 1998 to 2002; and

Whereas, The New Jersey Naval Militia was partly regulated and equipped by the federal government, but served as a reserve force that falls under State control, making New Jersey one of 23 states with state guards and one of seven states with a naval guard; and

Whereas, The New Jersey Naval Militia is a Joint Command, combining both the New Jersey Naval and Army State Guards; and

Whereas, The duties for the New Jersey Naval Militia Joint Command (NJNMJC) center include search and rescue, disaster mitigation and recovery, vessel escort, harbor and port security, infrastructure surveillance, and acting as a force multiplier for virtually any State or federal agency; and

Whereas, The NJNMJC has been recognized for exemplary and meritorious service, including during the September 11th attacks wherein a New Jersey Naval Guard patrol unit was the first military unit to respond to Lower Manhattan on September 11th; and

Whereas, New Jersey is home to some of the world’s most critical infrastructure, the country’s highest population densities, and is a transportation gateway to the United States with people and cargo arriving around the clock; and

Whereas, The NJNMJC has been without funding since 2002, even while they continue to train, serve in other volunteer capacities, and maintain State equipment and assets; and

Whereas, This State should properly utilize the valuable resources provided by the NJNMJC; and

Whereas, This House supports the NJNMJC to obtain funding; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  The Legislature of this House supports the New Jersey Naval Military Joint Command.

     2.   Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Governor, Adjutant General of the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, and every member of Congress elected from this State.

STATEMENT
