SENATE, No. 1126

with Assembly Floor Amendments

(Proposed by Assemblyman A.M. BUCCO)

ADOPTED: MAY 23, 2019

These Assembly floor amendments require the Department of Education (DOE) to review the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education to ensure that information on the provisions of the "New Jersey Safe Haven Infant Protection Act," P.L.2000, c.58 (C.30:4C-15.5 et seq.) is included in the standards to public school students in grades 9 through 12.

The bill as introduced, required that boards of education operating educational programs for public school students in grades 9 through 12 provide information on the "New Jersey Safe Haven Infant Protection Act," and that such instruction take place as part of the district's implementation of the Core Curriculum Content Standards in Comprehensive Health and Physical Education.  The amendments remove these requirements from the bill.

The floor amendments also mandate that the DOE, in consultation with the Department of Children and Families, take appropriate action to ensure that each school district incorporate education on the "New Jersey Safe Haven Infant Protection Act," that is age appropriate for public school students in grades 9 through 12.

The floor amendment also updates the effective date of the bill to first apply to the 2020-2021 school year instead of the 2019-2020 school year, as currently provided in the bill, and updates the bill’s synopsis to more accurately reflect the contents of the bill as amended.
