Permits licensed security officer employed at public school to wear body vest during employment.

An Act concerning licensed security officers employed at public schools and supplementing chapter 17 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. An employee of a licensed security officer company contracted by a board of education to provide school security shall be permitted to wear a body vest on school grounds and at school-sponsored functions during the term of the security officer’s assignment to the school district pursuant to the company’s employment contract.
As used in this section, "body vest" means bullet-resistant body armor which is intended to provide ballistic and trauma protection.
2. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill provides that an employee of a licensed security officer company contracted by a board of education to provide school security is permitted to wear a body vest on school grounds and at school-sponsored functions during the term of the security officer’s assignment to the school district pursuant to the company’s employment contract.
Current regulation, N.J.A.C.13:55A-6.1, provides that an employee of a licensed security officer company cannot use a title, badge, uniform, or other insignia, which is likely to be confused with that of any law enforcement officer. This bill is intended to prevent the application of that regulation from restricting the use of body armor by employees of a licensed security officer company contracted by a board of education to provide school security.
