STATEMENT

This concurrent resolution recognizes the 100th anniversary of the New Jersey Farm Bureau (NJFB) and commends the hard work of the NJFB in promoting agriculture, and helping farm families and their affiliated agricultural businesses and supporters of agriculture so effectively in the Garden State.

Agriculture has been a key part of New Jersey’s economy since the earliest Native American settlements, and served as the economic foundation for what would become the United States.  The importance of agriculture to the State is reflected in the designation of Garden State as the New Jersey slogan.  The agriculture and food industry, valued in the billions of dollars, is still vital to the State’s economy.

The NJFB is a grassroots, members supported, non-government organization that represents 12,000 farm families, affiliated agribusinesses, and supporters of agriculture for all types of agricultural production including equine, nursery, fruit and vegetable, field crops, apiary, wine growing, Christmas tree, forestry, and livestock.  In 1919, the NJFB was established as the New Jersey Council of County Boards of Agriculture.  Harry E. Taylor, of Monmouth County, the first elected president of this organization, was New Jersey’s delegate to the first American Farm Bureau Federation meeting in November 1919.  In 1920, the organization changed its name to the New Jersey Federation of County Boards of Agriculture and opened its first office in Trenton.  On October 1, 1933, the name of the organization was officially changed to the New Jersey Farm Bureau.

The NJFB is the largest advocacy organization for agriculture in New Jersey, advocating at the local, county, State, federal, and international levels of government to represent agricultural producers and enterprises of New Jersey.  The NJFB informs the public, agricultural producers, and enterprises of the latest regulatory and policy changes through meetings, publications, important action alerts, and through the Internet.  The NJFB uses grants, initiatives, and partnerships to provide promotional materials to members that aid in consumer education, farmer training and education programs, and public education about the agriculture industry.
