A Joint Resolution designating the calendar week containing May 15th of each year as “Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week” in New Jersey.
Whereas, As a nation, we rely on law enforcement officers to keep our neighborhoods safe, enforce our laws, and respond in times of crisis; and
Whereas, From combating terror and arresting criminals to patrolling our highways and city streets, law enforcement officers maintain stability in our communities, resulting in a secure nation that is free from the fear of violence and civil disorder; and
Whereas, Law enforcement officers in this State and throughout the nation are routinely called upon to serve and protect their fellow citizens by responding to horrendous events and acting heroically to save the lives of others; and
Whereas, Upholding justice, enforcing the rule of law, and protecting the innocent are just a few of the day-to-day duties that are faithfully and selflessly undertaken by law enforcement officers; and
Whereas, Every day, law enforcement officers face threats of violence and danger and routinely put themselves at risk of injury, disability, or even death to preserve and protect the lives and property of the people of this State; and
Whereas, These men and women, by their distinctive service and dedicated efforts as law enforcement officers, have earned our highest respect and deepest gratitude; and
Whereas, Since the enactment of Public Law 87-726 in 1962, the successive Presidents of this nation have each year proclaimed the calendar week containing May 15th as “Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week,” publicly recognizing the dedicated service given by the men and women who, night and day, stand guard in our midst to protect us through enforcement of our laws and respectfully honoring all those officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty; and
Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper, and within the public interest, to designate the calendar week containing May 15th of each year as “Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week” in New Jersey and to encourage the citizens of this State to join in the observance of this week of public recognition and appreciation for the law enforcement officers who serve and protect the people of this State; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The calendar week containing May 15th of each year shall be designated “Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week” in New Jersey to encourage the citizens of this State to join in the observance of this week of public recognition and appreciation for the law enforcement officers who selflessly serve and protect them.
2. The Governor is respectfully requested to annually issue a proclamation recognizing the calendar week containing May 15th of each year as “Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week” in New Jersey and to call upon public officials and the citizens of this State to observe the week with appropriate activities and programs.
3. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.

This resolution designates the calendar week containing May 15th of each year as “Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week” in New Jersey to encourage the citizens of this State to join in the observance of this week of public recognition and appreciation for the law enforcement officers who serve and protect them.
