Whereas, The Delta Dental of New Jersey Foundation, Zufall Health, and the New Jersey Dental Association will provide free dental services to United States military veterans and their families on November 3 and 4, 2018 at the Zufall Health Center in Dover, New Jersey, as part of the “Smiles for Our Heroes” event; and

Whereas, The event is also sponsored by the New Jersey branch of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the New Jersey Dental Assistants’ Association; and

Whereas, The free dental services will include routine examinations, cleanings, oral cancer assessments, x-ray services, fillings, extractions, root canals, and denture services; and

Whereas, The event will also include free food, giveaways, and access to informational and other resources; and

Whereas, The event’s sponsors will provide free transportation to the event, with pick-up points available in Morris, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, and Essex counties; and

Whereas, Dental health is an important component of overall health, and studies suggest that oral bacteria and the inflammation associated with gum disease may play a role in causing endocarditis and cardiovascular disease; and

Whereas, Many veterans have a difficult time finding room in their budgets for high quality dental services for themselves and their families; and

Whereas, Veterans have bravely sacrificed for their country, and the State of New Jersey has a strong interest in ensuring that veterans have access to high quality dental care in return for their honorable service; and

Whereas, It is fitting and proper for this House to commend the Delta Dental of New Jersey Foundation, Zufall Health, and the New Jersey Dental Association for providing free dental services to veterans, and to encourage them and other organizations to continue to offer such programs in the future; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

STATEMENT

This Senate resolution commends the Delta Dental of New Jersey Foundation, Zufall Health, and the New Jersey Dental Association for providing free dental care to veterans and their families on November 3 and 4, 2018.

The “Smiles for Our Heroes” event, which is also sponsored by the New Jersey branch of the American Dental Hygienists Association and the New Jersey Dental Assistants Association, will include free routine examinations, cleanings, oral cancer assessments, x-ray services, fillings, extractions, root canals, and denture services.  The event will also include free food, giveaways, and access to informational and other resources, and free transportation to the event from various locations in the State.

Dental health is an important component of overall health, yet many veterans have a difficult time finding room in their budgets for high quality dental services for themselves and their families.  It is thus fitting and proper for the Senate to recognize the Delta Dental of New Jersey Foundation, Zufall Health, and the New Jersey Dental Association for providing these services, and to encourage them and other organizations to continue to provide such programs in the future.
