STATEMENT TO
ASSEMBLY, No. 5392
with committee amendments
STATE OF NEW JERSEY
DATED: MAY 12, 2021
The Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee reports favorably and with committee amendments Assembly Bill No. 5392.
As amended and reported, this bill requires the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to allow a person with an unexpired, federally issued G-4 visa to renew the person’s basic driver’s license, motorcycle license, and identification card online and by mail so long as the person is otherwise eligible to use a stored photograph to renew the license or identification card.
The bill also clarifies that for a person who has demonstrated authorization to be present in the United States for a period of time shorter than the standard period of the license or identification card, the Chief Administrator may elect to use a stored photograph for the renewal of a license or identification card for the period of time in which the person is authorized to be present in the United States under federal immigration laws.
COMMITTEE AMENDMENTS
The committee amended the bill to update underlying statutory language to reflect a recent enactment.
