SYNOPSIS
Urges Congress and President to reauthorize “Child Nutrition Act of 1966.”

An Assembly Resolution urging Congress and the President to reauthorize the “Child Nutrition Act of 1966.”
Whereas, The “Child Nutrition Act of 1966” was enacted by Congress to strengthen and expand food service programs for children; and
Whereas, It is the policy of Congress to safeguard the health and well-being of the Nation’s children, and to encourage the domestic consumption of agricultural and other foods, by assisting the various states, through grants-in-aid and other means, to meet more effectively the nutritional needs of children; and
Whereas, In December 2010, the “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010” reauthorized numerous child nutrition programs including the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, and other federal programs that provide food and nutrition education to children and families, but this law expired on September 30, 2015; and
Whereas, Every five years, Congress and the President have the opportunity to review these programs and make improvements to programs that feed and educate millions of children from infancy through adolescence; and
Whereas, Reauthorization of the “Child Nutrition Act of 1966” is critically important to improving the health of our children and reducing hunger in this country; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House respectfully urges the United States Congress and the President to reauthorize the “Child Nutrition Act of 1966.”
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Speaker and the Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States Senate, each member of the United States Congress elected from this State, and the President of the United States.
STATEMENT
This resolution urges Congress and the President to reauthorize the “Child Nutrition Act of 1966” which was enacted to strengthen and expand food service programs for children. It is the policy of Congress to safeguard the health and well-being of the Nation’s children, and to encourage the domestic consumption of agricultural and other foods, by assisting the various states, through grants-in-aid and other means, to meet more effectively the nutritional needs of children.
In December 2010, the “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010” reauthorized numerous child nutrition programs and other federal programs that provide food and nutrition education to children and families, but this law expired on September 30, 2015. Every five years, Congress and the President have the opportunity to review these programs and make improvements to programs that feed and educate millions of children from infancy through adolescence.
