An Act requiring State toll road authorities to study the safety of overpasses on roads under their jurisdiction.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. Notwithstanding any law, rule or regulation to the contrary, each State toll road authority shall conduct a study of overpasses on the roads under its jurisdiction to determine the structural safety and other safety conditions of the overpasses and existing safety measures to maintain or improve those conditions, which study shall include, but not be limited to, a falling-object incident report. The authority shall report its findings, along with any recommendations to increase the safety of overpasses, to the Governor and the Legislature within nine months of the effective date of this act.

    For the purposes of this act, "toll road authority" means and includes the New Jersey Highway Authority established pursuant to P.L.1952, c.16 (C.27:12B-1 et seq.), the New Jersey Turnpike Authority established pursuant to P.L.1948, c.454 (C.27:23-1 et seq.) and the South Jersey Transportation Authority established pursuant to P.L.1991, c.252 (C.27:25A-1 et seq.).

 

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill would require the New Jersey Highway Authority, New Jersey Turnpike Authority, and South Jersey Transportation Authority to conduct a study of overpasses on the roads under its jurisdiction to determine the safety condition of the overpasses and existing measures to maintain or improve safety. The study would include a falling-object incident report. These authorities would be required to report their findings along with any recommendations to increase the


safety of overpasses, to the Governor and the Legislature, within nine months of the effective date of this act.
