An Act concerning the closing of municipal fire stations and supplementing chapter 14 of Title 40A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. Notwithstanding the provisions of any law, rule or regulation to the contrary, when the governing body of any municipality determines for any reason that 1a unit or units within1 a fire station in the municipality shall be closed, 1including units that shall be closed on a temporary or rotational basis,1 the decision of the governing body shall not be effective until a public notice announcing the closing of the 1unit or units within a1 fire station has been published in the official newspaper of the municipality 1[and] or1 broadcast on the cable television station servicing the municipality not less than twice during the one-month period immediately preceding the projected date of the closing of the 1unit or units within a1 fire station. 1Such notice shall also include a statement of the reason for the closing or deactivation and contain an alternate plan for fire and rescue protection for residents affected by the closing or deactivation. In the case of a decision of the governing body to permanently close or deactivate a unit or units within a fire station, the governing body shall be further required to adopt a separate ordinance for the deactivation or closing of each such unit.1

 

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.
