FISCAL NOTE TO

[First Reprint]

ASSEMBLY, No. 56

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: April 30, 1996

Assembly Bill No. 56 (1R) of 1996 increases the fine that may be imposed for a violation concerning the installation and maintenance of motor vehicle equipment. At present the maximum fine is $25. Under this proposal, the minimum fine would be $50 and the maximum fine $1,000.

According to records kept by the Judiciary, there were an estimated 95,000 violations processed in the last year concerning motor vehicle equipment. Assuming each violator received and paid a $25 fine, some $2.375 million would have been collected and then allocated among municipal, county, and State governments pursuant to statutory provisions.

Since this proposal would at least double the amount of the fine, the revenue provided to the various levels of government would, likewise, at least double if the number of violations remains constant. However, the actual amount received by the pertinent level of government would depend on the number of violations and the amount of the fine imposed.
