An Act designating the Department of Education building as the "Matthew Feldman Building" and supplementing chapter 4 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. The Legislature finds and declares that:

    a. Matthew Feldman, who brought wit, integrity and creative leadership to a distinguished public career in State and local government, died on Monday, April 11, 1994;

    b. Mr. Feldman, known affectionately as "Matty," was born in Jersey City on March 22, 1919, and attended the University of North Carolina and Panzer College, now part of Montclair State College;

    c. Matty was a captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II, gaining renown as a successful middleweight boxer, and later served as State Commander of Jewish War Veterans;

    d. As Mayor of Teaneck, Matty was instrumental in achieving racial and political harmony during the integration of the city's schools and neighborhoods;

    e. Elected to the Senate in 1965 and returned in 1973, Matty served in that House for over 20 years in various leadership positions, including two years as Senate President, and sponsored a wide array of major legislative initiatives;

    f. As longtime chairman of the Senate Education Committee, Matty was a compassionate and effective educator who placed the interests of New Jersey's school children first in every legislative debate; and

    g. It is altogether fitting and proper that the Department of Education bear the name of the legislator whose career represented a lifetime commitment to the cause of education and its betterment for all of the children of the State.

 

    2. The Department of Education Building in the city of Trenton is designated as the "Matthew Feldman Building."


    3. This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill designates the Department of Education Building in the city of Trenton as the "Matthew Feldman Building" in honor of the distinguished record of service and leadership on behalf of education provided by the late Senator Matthew Feldman.
