An Act concerning radon gas and radon progeny contamination in child care centers, and supplementing P.L.1985, c.408 (26:2D-59 et seq.).

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. a. The Department of Environmental Protection shall test for the presence of radon gas and radon progeny in every child care center licensed pursuant to the provisions of P.L.1983, c.492 (C.30:5B-1 et seq.) in the State.

    b. For any licensed child care center where levels of radon gas or radon progeny exceeds four picocuries per liter in the lowest level of the building used by children supervised at the center, the department shall develop a plan for a system to mitigate and safeguard against radon gas or radon progeny contamination at that center.

 

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill would require the Department of Environmental Protection to test every licensed child care center in the State for the presence of radon gas and radon progeny. The bill also requires that if levels are found to exceed four picocuries per liter, then the department shall develop a plan for a system to mitigate and safeguard against the contamination.
