An Act concerning illegal parking of trucks and supplementing chapter 4 of Title 39 of the Revised Statues.

Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. A person who parks a truck with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds on a divided highway or on the shoulder or berm of that highway in violation of R.S.39:4-138 shall be subject to a penalty of not less than $100 or more than $200.

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

The illegal parking of large trucks along the highways of this State creates a serious safety problem. In central New Jersey alone, at least five persons were killed in 1994 when the vehicles they were driving rammed into trucks parked illegally on the shoulder or berm of the roadway, according to reports in the Courier-News. To help police deal with this problem, this bill doubles the penalty for the illegal parking of large trucks. Under the terms of the bill the fine for this offense is increased from the present $50 to an amount of not less than $100 or more than $200.
