STATEMENT

This bill appropriates $50,000 to the Department of State for a grant by the State Council of the Arts to the South Jersey Symphony Orchestra. The grant will be used to defray operating expenses of the orchestra. Since 1981 the orchestra has made an outstanding contribution to the educational and cultural enrichment of the State's eight southernmost counties, an area served by few professional arts organizations. The orchestra performs an average of 25 concerts a year at various sites throughout the region.

The New Jersey Council on the Arts has been a major source of support for the orchestra over the past 12 years. However, the council recently announced it would not be awarding a grant this year, thereby placing the orchestra's entire 1994-1995 season in jeopardy. The modest appropriation provided by this bill will allow the orchestra to continue to bring fine music to the residents of the eight-county region.
