An Act concerning credit toward high school graduation requirements for certain foreign language courses and supplementing chapter 35 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. a. A pupil who is enrolled in a public high school within the State who completes a foreign language course offered by a religious organization or any other non-public school organization or entity shall receive credit for the course toward meeting the district's high school graduation requirements if the pupil passes an appropriate standardized content test in the foreign language.

    b. The State Board of Education shall determine those standardized content tests in foreign languages which demonstrate mastery of the required level of proficiency in the foreign language and the number of credits toward the high school graduation requirements which shall be awarded to a pupil who completes a foreign language course and passes the appropriate test.

 

    2. This act shall take effect July 1 next following enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill provides that a public high school pupil who completes a foreign language course offered by a religious organization or any other non-public school organization or entity shall receive credit for the course toward meeting the district’s high school graduation requirements if the pupil passes an appropriate standardized content test in the foreign language. The bill directs the State Board of Education to determine those standardized content tests which demonstrate mastery of the required level of proficiency in the foreign language and the number of credits to be awarded to a pupil who completes a foreign language course and the number of credits to be awarded to a pupil who completes a foreign language course and passes the appropriate test.
