An Act concerning credit toward high school graduation requirements for certain foreign language courses and supplementing chapter 35 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. 1[a.]1 A pupil who is enrolled in a public high school within the State who 1[completes] wishes to take a foreign language course not offered in the resident public school district may complete and receive credit toward high school graduation for1 a foreign language course offered by a religious organization or any other non-public school organization or entity 1[shall receive credit for the course toward meeting the district's high school graduation requirements if the pupil passes an appropriate standardized content test in the foreign language.

    b. The State Board of Education shall determine those standardized content tests in foreign languages which demonstrate mastery of the required level of proficiency in the foreign language and the number of credits toward the high school graduation requirements which shall be awarded to a pupil who completes a foreign language course and passes the appropriate test]. In order to receive credit for the course, the pupil must meet local district proficiency requirements1.

 

    2. This act shall take effect July 1 next following enactment.

 

                             

 

Provides credit toward high school graduation requirements for foreign language courses offered by religious or other non-public school organizations.
