An Act concerning tuition-free credits for certain undergraduate students and supplementing chapter 71 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. Any graduate of a high school in New Jersey who is enrolled as an undergraduate student at a public institution of higher education in this State enumerated in N.J.S.18A:62-1 and who is in good standing in a major program leading to a baccalaureate degree in mathematics or one of the life or physical sciences shall receive up to 15 credits tuition free during the final semester of the program.

 

    2. The State Board of Higher Education shall adopt, pursuant to the "Administrative Procedure Act," P.L.1968, c.410 (C.52:14B-1 et seq.), rules and regulations necessary to implement the provisions of this act.

 

    3. Section 2 of this act shall take effect immediately and section 1 shall take effect six months after the date of enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill provides that graduates of high schools in New Jersey who are enrolled as undergraduate students at public institutions of higher education in this State and who are in good standing in a major program leading to a baccalaureate degree in mathematics or one of the life or physical sciences shall receive up to 15 credits tuition free during the final semester of the program. The bill is designed to encourage undergraduate students to major in mathematics or science by offering a financial incentive. Regulations governing the program will be promulgated by the State Board of Higher Education.
