An Act concerning notification of certain offenses occurring in schools and supplementing Title 2C of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. When a person is found guilty of or pleads guilty to, or a juvenile is adjudicated delinquent for, any offense committed in an elementary or secondary school building or on school property while children are present, the court shall order that the appropriate board of education immediately be notified of the adjudication or plea. Upon receiving such notification, the board of education may provide for the notification of the parents or guardians of all children attending schools in that district. The board of education may also notify boards of education of any other school districts. Such notification may include information concerning the nature of the offense charged, the date and location of the offense and the disposition of the case, including any sentence imposed.

 

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill would allow the court, upon an adult or juvenile's adjudication of guilt for the commission of any offense in a school or on school property while children were present, to notify the appropriate board of education. The board of education would be allowed to notify the parents or guardians of all children attending schools in the district, and could also notify boards of education in other districts. The notification could include information concerning the nature of the offense, the date it occurred, and the disposition of the case, including any sentence imposed.


 

Provides that parents may be notified when a person is found guilty of committing a criminal offense in a school while children were present.
