An Act concerning academic credit for certain students who serve on district boards of election and supplementing chapter 62 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. A student who is enrolled in a public institution of higher education in this State and who is in a major program leading to a baccalaureate degree in political science shall receive two semester hours of credit if the student serves at least one term on a district board of election pursuant to the requirements of R.S.19:6-1 et seq.

 

    2. The State Board of Higher Education shall adopt, pursuant to the "Administrative Procedure Act," P.L.1968, c.410 (C.52:14B-1 et seq.), rules and regulations necessary to implement the provisions of this act.

 

    3. This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill provides that political science majors who are enrolled in a public institution of higher education shall receive two semester hours of credit if they serve at least one term on a district board of election. Under the current statutes, a term begins on April 25 and is for one year.

    The bill is designed to alleviate a shortage of poll workers throughout the State by offering an incentive for college students to serve on district boards of election.
