By Assemblymen GIBSON, Kramer, Carroll, Stuhltrager, Kelly, Assemblywoman Heck, Assemblyman Felice and Assemblywoman Farragher

An Act concerning abortion and supplementing Title 45 of the Revised Statutes.

Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. A physician who is to perform an abortion shall inform the pregnant woman of the potential increased risk of breast cancer associated with the termination of her pregnancy, prior to performing the abortion.

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 7,000 new cases of female breast cancer will have been diagnosed in New Jersey during 1995. Approximately 1,800 women in the State will have died from this disease in 1995.

Some research findings indicate that women who have abortions before their first live birth may experience a greater risk of developing breast cancer than women who have not had abortions.

This bill requires a physician who is to perform an abortion to inform the pregnant woman of the potential increased risk of breast cancer associated with the termination of her pregnancy, prior to performing the abortion.
