An Act concerning certain student programs and supplementing chapter 11 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. A board of education may elect to sponsor a club program in a sport and schedule interscholastic competition for the team. If the board has joined an association under the provisions of section 1 of P.L.1979, c.172 (C.18A:11-3), the club program shall be subject to the rules and regulations promulgated for the sport by the association.

    As used in this act, a "club program" means a program in a sport which derives all or part of its funding from private sources.

 

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill permits a board of education to sponsor a club program in a sport and to schedule interscholastic competition for the team. If the board has joined the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, the club program would be subject to the rules and regulations promulgated for the sport by the association.

    In a number of New Jersey communities, there are club programs for such sports as swimming and ice hockey. Funds for the programs are provided in whole or in part by the parents, supporters and participants. A club program is defined in the bill as a program in a sport which derives all or part of its funding from private sources.
