ASSEMBLY JUDICIARY COMMITTEE
STATEMENT TO
ASSEMBLY, No. 1832
with committee amendments
STATE OF NEW JERSEY
DATED: JANUARY 23, 1997
The Assembly Judiciary Committee reports favorably and with committee amendments Assembly Bill No. 1832.
This bill would upgrade a simple assault against a judge while clearly identifiable as being engaged in the performance of judicial duties or because of status as a member of the judiciary to aggravated assault. Aggravated assault under these circumstances is graded as a crime of the third degree if the victim suffers bodily injury, otherwise it is a crime of the fourth degree.
In its original form the bill would have also upgraded the crime of stalking if committed against a judge because of his status as a judge. The committee amendments eliminate this provision of the bill.
As amended, this bill is identical to Senate Bill No. 356.
