SENATE ECONOMIC GROWTH, AGRICULTURE AND TOURISM COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

ASSEMBLY, No. 2269

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: MAY 8, 1997

The Senate Economic Growth, Agriculture and Tourism Committee favorably reports Assembly Bill No. 2269.

This bill would designate the ostrich, emu, and rhea as agricultural livestock, subject to regulations by the Department of Agriculture. Currently, these birds are considered an "exotic species," and their possession is regulated by the Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife in the Department of Environmental Protection. The bill also would permit the Secretary of Agriculture to adopt rules and regulations necessary to effectuate the purposes of this act.
