ASSEMBLY LAW AND PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

ASSEMBLY, No. 2273

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: JANUARY 9,1997

The Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee reports favorably Assembly Bill No. 2273.

Assembly Bill No. 2273 amends N.J.S.A. 2A:4A-60 to require that information maintained in a central registry pursuant to subsection g. be made accessible to State and local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors on a 24-hour basis. This would allow law enforcement officers to have at their disposal at all times as many details as possible concerning a juvenile's history of violence. Unlimited access to this information will allow law enforcement officers to better protect themselves and their communities by enhancing their ability to make decisions regarding the arrest and detention of juveniles.
