ASSEMBLY EDUCATION COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

ASSEMBLY, No. 2319

with committee amendments

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: OCTOBER 7, 1996

The Assembly Education Committee favorably reports Assembly Bill No. 2319 with committee amendments.

Under existing law, the names of the State colleges are designated by the individual college's board of trustees subject to regulations of the Commission on Higher Education concerning university status. As amended by committee, this bill provides that whenever the board of trustees of a State college wants to change the name of the institution, the board must obtain the approval of the Governor and the Legislature prior to the adoption of that change.

The committee amended the bill to clarify that the approval of the Governor and the Legislature would not be needed if the name change is being made in connection with the institution's attainment of university status.
