An Act establishing the New Jersey State Constitution Commemoration Commission and making an appropriation.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. There is established the New Jersey State Constitution Commemoration Commission to consist of seven members: two members appointed by the President of the Senate from among the members thereof, not more than one of whom shall be of the same political party; two members appointed by the Speaker of the General Assembly from among the members thereof, not more than one of whom shall be of the same political party; two public members appointed by the Governor, not more than one of whom shall be of the same political party; and one public member appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Legislative members shall serve during their terms of office. Public members shall serve until the expiration of this act. Vacancies shall be filled for the unexpired term only and shall be filled in the same manner as the original appointments were made.

 

    2. Members of the commission shall serve without compensation but shall be entitled to reimbursement for necessary expenses incurred in the performance of their duties.

 

    3. The commission shall elect from among its members a chairperson and vice-chairperson and may appoint a secretary who need not be a member of the commission.

 

    4. It shall be the duty of the commission to develop, plan and coordinate events and activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the drafting and ratification of the 1947 New Jersey State Constitution.

 

    5. The commission shall be entitled to call to its assistance and avail itself of the services of the employees of any State, county, or municipal department, board, bureau, commission or agency as it may require and as may be available to it to carry out its purposes, and to employ such stenographic, clerical, technical and expert assistance and incur travel and other miscellaneous expenses as it may deem necessary, in order to perform its duties and as may be within the limits of funds appropriated or otherwise made available to it to accomplish its objectives.

 

    6. There is appropriated from the General Fund to the commission $80,000 to carry out the purposes of this act.

 

    7. This act shall take effect immediately and shall expire March 1, 1998.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill establishes a seven-member New Jersey State Constitution Commemoration Commission to develop, plan and coordinate events and activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the drafting and ratification of the 1947 New Jersey State Constitution. The commission shall consist of two members of the Senate, appointed by the President, two members of the General Assembly, appointed by the Speaker, two public members appointed by the Governor, and one public member appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

    There is appropriated from the General Fund to the commission $80,000 to carry out the purposes of this act. This act shall take effect immediately and shall expire March 1, 1998.
