ASSEMBLY JUDICIARY COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

ASSEMBLY, No. 2604

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: JUNE 12, 1997

The Assembly Judiciary Committee reports favorably Assembly Bill No. 2604.

Under the provisions of the "Judicial Retirement System Act," (N.J.S.A.43:6A-1 et seq.), retired Supreme Court justices and Superior Court judges while permitted to practice law, are not permitted to appear in any State court. This bill would clarify that this prohibition against appearing in court should not be construed as prohibiting retired justices and judges from representing parties before auto arbitration panels or from serving as an attorney in matters before State or local administrative agencies such as zoning and planning boards.

This bill is identical to Senate Bill No. 1269.
