ASSEMBLY CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. 122

 

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

 

INTRODUCED JUNE 5, 1997

A Concurrent Resolution urging the United States Postal Service to issue a stamp commemorating Elizabeth Monroe Boggs.

 

Whereas, Elizabeth Monroe Boggs, universally known and loved in the New Jersey and national developmental disabilities community, died on January 27, 1996 at the age of 82 from injuries sustained in a serious car accident; and

Whereas, Elizabeth Monroe Boggs was a founder and former president of The Arc of the United States as well as an accomplished political strategist who was instrumental in the passage of State and federal landmark disability legislation, and was said to have coined the term "developmental disabilities;" and

Whereas, Elizabeth Monroe Boggs was an expert on the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program who served on the President's Commission on Mental Retardation during the Kennedy administration and worked with members of Congress to develop the SSI program for people with developmental impairments; and

Whereas, In 1988 she served as the director of the New Jersey Office of Prevention of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities and was a strong advocate for people with developmental disabilities; now, therefore,

 

    Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey (the Senate concurring):

 

    1. The Legislature of the State of New Jersey strongly urges the United States Postal Service to issue a stamp commemorating the contributions of Elizabeth Monroe Boggs.

 

    2. Duly authenticated copies of this concurrent resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk of the General Assembly, and signed by the President of the Senate and attested by the Secretary of the Senate, shall be transmitted to the Postmaster General of the United States and to each of the members of the Congress of the United States elected from the State of New Jersey.
