ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION No. 123
STATE OF NEW JERSEY
INTRODUCED OCTOBER 7, 1996
By Assemblymen O’TOOLE and WEINGARTEN
An Assembly Resolution memorializing Congress to appropriate funds for the creation of the Grover Cleveland Library in Caldwell, New Jersey.
Whereas, Grover Cleveland served as the 22d and 24th president of the United States, the only American chief executive to have served nonconsecutive terms; and
Whereas, Cleveland was born in Caldwell, New Jersey, on March 18, 1837, the only president born in this State and, upon retiring from the presidency, moved to Princeton, New Jersey, where he died on June 24, 1908; and
Whereas, The birthplace of Cleveland is maintained today by the Grover Cleveland Birthplace Memorial Association as a museum where visitors can see the restored rooms of the home and a collection of personal effects; and
Whereas, The association would like to establish a library on property adjacent to the birthplace which was donated for that purpose some years ago; and
Whereas, It is appropriate that the writings of this important American president, now scattered and held in various libraries, should be brought together and made accessible in a library associated with his birthplace; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The Congress of the United States is respectfully memorialized to appropriate funds for the creation of the Grover Cleveland Library in Caldwell, New Jersey.
2. Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Clerk of the General Assembly and attested by the Speaker thereof, shall be transmitted to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and each member of Congress from the State of New Jersey.
