ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION No. 12

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

INTRODUCED OCTOBER 7, 1996

By Assemblymen GEIST and ASSELTA

An Assembly Resolution calling on county and municipal governments and boards of education to reaffirm support for the observance of Veterans' Day.

Whereas, Veterans' Day dates back to November 11, 1919, the first     anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I;        and

Whereas, Until 1954, November 11 was known as Armistice Day     and was the occasion to honor those who had given their lives in

World War I and, later, World War II; and

Whereas, In 1954 federal legislation was enacted to designate     November 11 as Veterans' Day and to proclaim it as an occasion to     honor veterans of all wars; and

Whereas, Veterans' Day has also been proclaimed a public holiday     in this State, and the public offices of the State government are     closed for the transaction of business; and

Whereas, In the fast-paced life of this day and age, it is easy to lose     sight of the meaning of Veterans' Day, especially because of the     commercialization that has occurred in connection with this holiday;          and

Whereas, It is important for all levels of government in this State,     and especially for schools in the State, to recognize and honor the     service in time of war by citizens of this State and to recognize and     honor the sacrifice of lives made while in service to the nation; and

Whereas, Schools should be particularly sensitive to the importance     of helping students to understand the meaning and significance of     this holiday; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. This House calls upon county and municipal governments and boards of education in school districts to reaffirm support for the observance of Veterans' Day by providing for appropriate ceremonies or by participating in the public holiday.

    2. Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the New Jersey Association of Counties, the New Jersey League of Municipalities, and the New Jersey School Boards Association.
