ASSEMBLY CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND REGULATED PROFESSIONS COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION No. 177

with committee amendments

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: NOVEMBER 17, 1997

The Assembly Consumer Affairs and Regulated Professions Committee reports favorably and with committee amendments Assembly Resolution No. 177.

This amended resolution memorializes the Congress and President of the United States to enact the "Telemarketing Fraud Prevention Act of 1997," which is H.R.1847. This federal legislation proposes taking disciplinary action against illegitimate telemarketers by directing courts to confiscate the money or assets these telemarketers obtained through cheating consumers. In addition, the bill directs the United States Sentencing Commission to increase the penalties for telemarketing fraud, especially those schemes that target seniors.

The committee adopted a technical amendment to this resolution.
