ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION No. 38

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

Introduced Pending Technical Review by Legislative Counsel

PRE-FILED FOR INTRODUCTION IN THE 1996 SESSION

By Assemblyman GEIST

An Assembly Resolution opposing a proposed connector road between the New Jersey Turnpike and the Atlantic City Expressway in Gloucester County.

Whereas, In 1990, the Transportation Executive Council issued a report concerning transportation in southern New Jersey and in that report identified a number of strategies to address transportation issues in the area, including a connector road linking the New Jersey Turnpike (the Turnpike) and the Atlantic City Expressway (the Expressway); and

Whereas, As a result of the Transportation Executive Council Report, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, in cooperation with the South Jersey Transportation Authority, conducted an alternative route development study for a connector roadway between the Turnpike and the Expressway; and

Whereas, The New Jersey Turnpike Authority recently released the results of its alternate route development study, which propose nine alternative routes to connect the Turnpike and the Expressway; and

Whereas, There has been public outcry, especially in the borough of Pitman and the townships of Washington and Monroe in Gloucester County, against the proposed alternative routes in the report, which routes would adversely impact farmland and wetlands, as well as noise and air quality, and would disrupt the community life of those municipalities it would traverse; and

Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper for this House, in expressing the sense of the citizens it has been elected to represent, to express opposition to a proposed connector roadway between the New Jersey Turnpike and the Atlantic City Expressway in Gloucester County; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. The General Assembly opposes, for the reasons expressed in the preamble hereto, a proposed connector roadway between the New Jersey Turnpike and the Atlantic City Expressway in Gloucester County.

    2. Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the Governor of the State of New Jersey, the members of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and the members of the South Jersey Transportation Authority.
