ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION No. 62
STATE OF NEW JERSEY
INTRODUCED FEBRUARY 29, 1996
By Assemblywoman WEINBERG and Assemblyman ZISA
An Assembly Resolution honoring the memories of Sara Duker and Matthew Eisenfeld, victims of a terrorist bombing, extending condolences to their families and deploring such acts of terrorist violence.
Whereas, Sara Duker, of Teaneck, New Jersey, and Matthew Eisenfeld of West Hartford, Connecticut were killed in Jerusalem on Sunday, February 25, 1996, when a bomb set by Islamic militants exploded on their bus, killing 23 of their fellow passengers and wounding 80 people; and
Whereas, Sara, a gifted, caring and compassionate young woman, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and recent summa cum laude graduate of Barnard College, was continuing her studies in Environmental Science at Hebrew University in Jerusalem; and
Whereas, Matthew, a talented young Talmudic scholar who had earned the highest praise for his intellectual and leadership abilities while at Yale University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, was studying in Jerusalem at the time of this heinous and bloody crime; and
Whereas, People of this State, the State of Israel, and all over the world are mourning the loss of Sara and Matthew, two dedicated young people who enriched the world with their love of Jewish faith and music, and who certainly would have become intellectual and spiritual leaders of their people had the terrorist's bomb not tragically cut their lives short; and
Whereas, Despite their tremendous grief and pain, the families of Sara and Matthew have stated that they do not want the senseless deaths of their children to deter efforts to achieve peace in Israel; and
Whereas, It is our fervent hope that the beauty and goodness of the lives of these two young people will somehow shine through this tragedy and inspire political and spiritual leaders to continue to work for peace in the Middle East, so that this horrible and bloody crime never happens again; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House honors the memories of Sara Duker, of Teaneck, New Jersey, and Matthew Eisenfeld of West Hartford, Connecticut, and extends condolences to their families.
2. This House strongly and forcefully condemns such senseless acts of violence.
3. Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the Duker and Eisenfeld families.
