ASSEMBLY EDUCATION COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION No. 68

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: MARCH 25, 1996

The Assembly Education Committee reports favorably Assembly Resolution Bill No. 68.

This resolution commemorates the tenth anniversary of the New Jersey State College Governing Boards Association. The association was established by the Legislature pursuant to P.L.1985, c.161 as a non-profit higher educational association to engage in activities for the collective advancement of the State colleges. Since its formation in July of 1985, the association has acted as a strong advocate for the needs of the State colleges and public teaching university which are members of the association and has also played a key role in advising the Governor and the Legislature on major initiatives affecting higher education within the State.

During the past ten years, the association has worked diligently to articulate how the State colleges/university serve the citizens of New Jersey through educational, social, and economic development activities; has provided policy research and information services about the resource needs and policy concerns of the institutions; has enhanced, through collaborative efforts, the ability of the State colleges/university to achieve effective institutional performance, autonomous governance, and public accountability; and has convened forums of diverse constituencies to develop common opinion about the value of public investment in higher education and the contributions of the State colleges/university.

This resolution acknowledges the achievements and contributions of the New Jersey State College Governing Boards Association over the past ten years and recognizes the important role which the association will continue to play in the future regarding issues affecting higher education within the State.
