Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. N.J.S.18A:31-2 is amended to read as follows:

18A:31-2. Whenever any full-time teaching staff member of any board of education of any local school district or regional school district or of a county vocational school or any secretary, or office clerk applies to the board of education by which he is employed for permission to attend the annual convention of the New Jersey Education Association, such permission shall be granted for a period of not more than two days in any one year [and he shall receive his whole salary for the days of actual attendance upon the sessions of such convention upon filing with the secretary of the board a certificate of such attendance signed by the executive secretary of the association]. (cf: N.J.S.18A:31-2)

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

Currently, teachers are granted up to two days off with pay to attend the New Jersey Education Association's annual convention if they provide the board of education with a certificate of attendance. Under this bill, the board would be required to grant permission to

attend the conference; however, teachers would have to take the daysoff without pay or use their personal or vacation time.

Requires teaching staff members to utilize their own time to attend the NJEA's annual convention.
