SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

SENATE, No. 225

with committee amendments

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: JANUARY 22, 1996

The TRANSPORTATION Committee reports favorable Senate Bill No. 225.

The Senate Transportation Committee favorably reports Senate Bill No. 225 with committee amendments.

This amended bill amends current law which now provides that senior citizens and handicapped citizens are provided with reduced bus and rail fares only during offpeak times. Since senior citizens and handicapped citizens are not always able to arrange their essential appointments (e.g., medical treatment) so that only offpeak travel is necessary and the cost of peak travel is particularly burdensome to those senior citizens and handicapped citizens who meet the eligibility requirements of the "Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled" program, P.L.1975, c.194 (C.30:4D-20 et seq.), this amended bill provides that those senior citizens and handicapped citizens who meet the eligibility requirements of the "Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled" program would receive reduced fares at all times bus and rail service is offered.

The amendments approved by the committee conform the provisions of the finding and declarations section of the bill to the other provisions of the bill and make other technical changes updating its provisions.

Technical review was performed on this pre-filed bill, as required under Joint Rule 18A of the Senate and General Assembly.
