SENATE LAW AND PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

SENATE, No. 235

with committee amendments

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: OCTOBER 24, 1996

The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee reports favorably and with committee amendments Senate Bill No. 235.

This bill appropriates $7 million in funding to the Department of Corrections to hire additional parole officers. It is the committee's understanding that the bill will enable the department to reduce the parole officer caseload by one-third, from the current caseload of 70 parolees per officer to 47 parolees per officer.

The committee amendments are technical and enable the department to use this funding to hire the additional officers and provide them with needed equipment to perform the duties of their position.
