SENATE, No. 244

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

PRE-FILED FOR INTRODUCTION IN THE 1996 SESSION

By Senator ZANE

An Act concerning certain license plates and supplementing chapter 3 of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes.

Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. a. The lessee in a motor vehicle leasing agreement or the owner of a motor vehicle who obtains personalized, courtesy or special license plates with special identifying marks may obtain and use a duplicate set of those license plates upon another motor vehicle if it is owned or leased by that person.

    b. The fees for the additional license plates shall be prescribed by the director.

    c. The director may promulgate rules and regulations to effectuate the purposes of this act.

    2. This act shall take effect on the first day of the sixth month following enactment.

STATEMENT

Currently, an owner of a vehicle who has been issued a set of personalized license plates may obtain a duplicate set for a second owned vehicle. The Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) currently does not allow owners to use duplicate plates on two vehicles if one vehicle is owned and one is leased, even though both are used by the same person. This bill would require DMV to allow a person to use the same personalized license plates on both vehicles, whether the vehicles are owned or leased.

Allows duplicate personalized license plates on owned and leased vehicles.
