SENATE LAW AND PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

SENATE, No. 244

with committee amendments

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: MAY 9, 1996

The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee reports favorably Senate Bill No. 244 with committee amendments.

As amended and released by the committee, this bill permits the lessee in a motor vehicle leasing agreement or the owner of a motor vehicle who obtains personalized, courtesy or special license plates to obtain a second set of those plates for use upon another motor vehicle owned or leased by that person.

Currently, an owner of a vehicle who has been issued a set of personalized license plates may obtain another set for a second owned vehicle, but not a leased vehicle. This bill would require DMV to allow a person to use the same personalized license plates on both vehicles, whether the vehicles are owned or leased.

The committee amendment is technical in nature; it refers to the initial set of license plates issued as the "base set" and the additional set as the "second set in a series."
