SENATE LAW AND PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

SENATE, No. 426

with committee amendments

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: OCTOBER 24, 1996

The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee reports favorably and with committee amendments Senate Bill No. 426.

Under current law, if a parolee from another state requests permission to relocate to New Jersey pursuant to the terms of the interstate compact on parolees, the Commissioner of Corrections is required to review that request and determine whether the parolee is eligible to reside in New Jersey. Under this bill, if the commissioner determines that a parolee is eligible to reside in this State, a report indicating the grounds for this determination must be submitted to the Attorney General for review. The commissioner could not grant permission for the transfer of that parolee to New Jersey until the report is approved by the Attorney General.

The committee amendments are technical in nature.
