An Act concerning the use of school buses and supplementing chapter 39 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The board of education of a school district may, pursuant to rules adopted by it, permit the use of school buses owned, leased or contracted by the school district for the purpose of transporting a handicapped adult who is continuing his education and training following graduation from secondary school. Transportation pursuant to this section will be limited to space availability on vehicles engaged in the transportation of school-age pupils along established routes. The board shall require that the individual transported, or his parent or guardian, pay all or part of any costs incurred by the district in providing the transportation, including but not limited to, the costs of fuel, driver salaries, insurance and depreciation.
2. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill authorizes school districts to provide transportation to handicapped adults who are furthering their education or training. The transportation will be limited to a space availability basis on school buses transporting school-age pupils along established routes. The costs of transporting the handicapped adult will be paid all or in part by the handicapped individual or his parent or guardian.
